what to expect

Throughout the process, patients can expect personalized care and support. After the initial consultation, they'll receive pre-operative instructions and undergo surgery at an accredited outpatient surgical center. Post-surgery, patients will have follow-up appointments for monitoring and care. Recovery involves managing discomfort and swelling, with gradual improvement in abdominal contour over several weeks. The final results, including a flatter abdomen, become evident as healing progresses. Throughout, patients can expect guidance, communication, and support from our experienced medical team with the goal of achieving a positive experience and satisfying outcome.

Things to consider before moving forward with Panniculectomy surgery:

  • Maximum discomfort will occur the first few days after surgery and then will subside gradually.

  • The abdomen may be sore and you might experience a burning sensation, which is normal and will subside with time.

  • You will be sent home with drains, which will be removed at a later date in the clinic.

  • Nausea can occur following any surgical procedure and generally passes by the first postoperative day.

  • Compression Wear (abdominal binder) must be worn all day and night for about 4-6 weeks after surgery.

  • It is generally best to plan to take seven to ten days off before returning to work. If your job is physical, it is not unreasonable to take some extra time.

Please follow this list of medications and supplements to avoid prior to having your procedure.

Surgery FAQ’s

panniculectomy AT HOLLAND PLASTIC SURGERY

A panniculectomy means the surgical reduction of the pannus. The pannus is defined as the overhanging skin of the lower abdomen from substantial weight loss, pregnancy or both. It may be performed as a standalone functional procedure (only treating the pannus) or combined with a tummy tuck, which would also tighten the abdominal muscles. Commonly, a panniculectomy is performed with another abdominal surgery, such as a hysterectomy, repair of a belly button hernia or the abdominal wall.

Dr. Holland was kind, thorough, and did not rush me. She took all the time to answer my questions and was very caring. I was really nervous because I have never done anything like this before and didn’t know what to expect. But after talking to her all my nerves were gone. I am looking forward to having my surgery.
